Named for the mythological, fire breathing monster Chimaera, the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, with the body of a goat, the head of a lion, and the tail of a dragon.
First discovered by Benedict Roezl in March, 1870, probably west of Cali in Cauca in the Westem Cordillera.
